ON AND OFF THE BIKE; SWISS STYLE...
The frustrated search for singletrack around Zurich drove the initial Swiss Epic aspirations. Turns out the other options are pretty phenomenal.
On the bike:
Zurich and Switzerland happen to be an often overlooked road and particularly gravel bike paradise. Thousands of kilometers of near pothole free roads, alpine passes and varied gravel tracks offer multpile lifetimes of stunning bike riding potential.
Winter Gravel and MTB training rides are a brilliant option, there are huge numbers of ridable trails even when there is snow around once it consolidates into a ridable surface. A great way to avoid ice on the roads.
Once the snow has cleared in the spring and the temperatures rise, check out the Furka pass, Old St Gottard or Abula passes for road bike sheer joy.
In reality though, nearly every route can be super high quality given the options to easily avoid busy roads, the many car free routes and the pristine nature of the riding surfaces regardless of road or gravel.
Mountain bike:
While the area near Zurich has some limitations by lacking many extensive quality singletrails, this gives no real issues for specific intensity training routes. There are plenty varied steepness hills to climb, it's just that for descending, really good quality trails are very limited. Best options are the Pfannensteil forest (near the summit area) where a couple of good trails can be found. Nearer the centre of Zurich, the Antenna trail at Uetliberg has the best dedicated singletrack near the city.
Mountain biking beyond Zurich:
If one is prepared to travel a bit then suddenly things get really good.
Even as close as Rapperwill-Jona one can begin to find more variety of singletrack. Pro XC legends Lars Forster and Kate Courtney have this locale as their base in normal summers.
Other good locations for single-track can certainly be found by following the lift access crowd. Many areas can offer great trips if one travels a bit beyond the bike park trails too.

Flumserberg
Some super nice flow trails here, lift access but a DH bike is certainly not needed. Trail bikes are a much better option. A great spot to work on trail singletrack skills.

Awesome spot, sooooo much to do. (see Laax also)! 🤩
Laax:
Definitely planning heading back here. There is tons to do for some top notch trail riding....
Home to some of the best and newest trails in the Graubünden area, eco-friendly trail building pioneers too.
Lenzerheide:
Great spot for DH style riding on the lower areas, tons of great lift assisted trail riding once folks venture further afield. A "bike kingdom" is the promise here. Also a favourite venue of Jolanda Neff and the UCI MTB world cup circuit.

XC skiing
One of the best forms of winter training for the Singletrack race team's summer bike aspirations, has been to make use of the numerous XC ski circuits near and further afield from Zurich. It's a fantastic cardio workout for working on endurance pace or intensity VO2 max systems and xc challenges the whole body, which is ideal for a MTB racer. Skate skiing makes a welcome departure from single plane direction of movement for the legs/quads also, helping prevent injury from bike training only.
Ski Touring
Another stunning way to work on winter base fitness which the team partakes in. Travelling in the mountains to peaks or mountain huts as part of a tour, or days out to head for a summit really work the quads and core.
Doubly so for the telemarking members of the team!
Summer off the Bike; Swiss style
Tifin put the rest of the team to shame (and ran them into the ground) with her summer alpine training adding tons of trail running, thus getting solid finishes in multiple alpine trail races such as the Matterhorn Ultratrail.
The rest of us thought the terrain looked ideal for skis or a bike......
